Belle
Belle is a very attractive 17-years old young woman. Belle is stunningly beautiful. She has long brown hair, most often tied back in a low ponytail, hazel eyes, rosy cheeks, and a sculpted figure. One of her distinct features are the strands of hair that constantly find their way onto her forehead, causing her to frequently brush them back into place. Throughout the film, Belle wears various outfits depending on the occasion. Her most elaborate and renowned is her golden ball gown. The storywriters and producers of Beauty and the Beast wanted to give Belle's movements an air of elegance, so they studied the movements of ballerinas during the course of Belle's development. Like ballerinas, Belle walks diligently and swiftly on her toes no matter what types of shoes she is wearing, or where she is located. The designers and artists wanted Belle to be noticeable in a crowded town, so they payed close attention to her wardrobe. Therefore, Belle is the only member of the town to wear blue, while the other townsfolk wear rustic and earthy colors, such as red, green, orange and brown.
The Beast
In the original tale, the Beast is seen wanting to be kind-hearted for the most part, and gentleman-like, with only an occasional tendency to be hot-tempered. The Beast is seen shirt-less, with ragged, dark gray breeches, and a ragged reddish-colored cape with a golden colored circular-shaped clasp. Despite the actual color of his cape being a dark wine red color, The Beast's cape is more often referenced to be purple. The reason for this change in color is unknown, although the most likely reason is because the color purple is often associated with royalty. is responsible for helping come up with the design of the Beast. He went from insect forms, avian forms and fish forms until he finally got the right design. The Beast is not of any one species of animal, but a chimera, a mixture of several animals. He has the head structure and horns of a buffalo, the arms and body of a bear, the eyebrows of a gorilla, the jaws, teeth, and mane of a lion, the tusks of a wild boar and the legs and tail of a wolf. He also bears resemblance to mythical monsters like the Minotaur or a werewolf. In the original versions, he was described more like a cross between a lion and a mythical animal. He also has blue eyes, the one physical feature that does not change whether he is a beast or a human.
Gaston
His original last name, LeGume, is a pun on his "peabrained" intelligence. Gaston is strong and handsome, and is all too aware of this. He is hailed as a local hero and the greatest hunter, desired by many of the young women of his village. When it comes to women, he is extremely vain and rude, demonstrated by his interest in Belle being solely physical rather than emotional. Throughout the film as he shows his true nature as cruel, violent, and insane. This is first shown when he formulates a plan to blackmail Belle into marrying him by bribing Monsieur D'Arque, the owner of the local madhouse, to lock Maurice up.
Lumière
Lumière (his name meaning "light" in French) is a candelabra with a French accent. Lumière is a kind-hearted, yet rebellious, servant of the Beast. He has a habit of disobeying his master's rules that results in controversy, but after Belle, he is arguably the Beast's closest friend, demonstrated when the Beast often turns to Lumière and no one else for advice. His free-spirited and rebellious personality also often puts a severe strain on his friendship with Cogsworth, whom prefers to abide strictly by his master's rules so as to avoid any trouble for himself and anyone else, but as shown many times in the game and film series, he values Cogsworth like a brother. He is depicted as sort of a lady's man, as Beast often goes to him for love advice dealing with his feelings for Belle. Next to Belle, Lumière is Beast's best friend. He is the voice of Jeff Bennet.
Mrs Potts
She is the mother of Chip who was turned into a teacup. She is voiced by Angela Lansbury. Mrs. Potts is very motherly in nature, which befits her as she is mother to the teacup Chip and his other brothers and sisters. As the castle's head housekeeper, she has a very strict sense of responsibility. Often she is kind and consoling, but can be stern when the situation calls for her to be; out of all of the Beast's servants, she is the one who will most likely confront him about his behavior when he is in a temper (depending on how extreme the Beast's mood is). Mrs. Potts first appears after the curse has been put upon her and the castle servants. Mrs. Potts assist the sick and weak Maurice who was stranded in the woods. While comforting Maurice, the master of the castle Beast viciously stormed in and took Maurice to the dungeon. Mrs. Potts then meet Belle who took her father's place. Mrs. Potts comforts Belle and assures her every things fine. Mrs. Potts is the first to be bold against the Beast and tries to help him look like a gentlemen which proves to be difficult.
Cogsworth
He is the Beast's majordomo, voiced byDavid Ogden Stiers, and also the best friend of Lumière. Cogsworth naturally has a serious demeanor which is evident in his strict attitude in serving the Beast and ordering the other servants around constantly. However, Cogsworth does mean well and is as good-natured as Lumière is. He is Lumière's best friend and also a rival of sorts. Cogsworth's preference to abide by the Beast's rules often puts a severe strain on his friendship with Lumière, who opts for a more rebellious and care-free personality, but overall, he values his friendship with Lumière and sees him as a brother, demonstrated in the original film (when he saves Lumière from being melted by LeFou, Gaston's henchman) and the midquels.
Maurice
Maurice is the father of Belle and father in law of the Beast. He was voiced by the late Rex Everhart and later on by Jeff Bennett and Corey Burton. Maurice is an inventor living in a little French town with Belle, his daughter, and has a dream to make a good invention and become rich, so he and Belle can move away to a bigger town. The townsfolk, including Gaston the hunter, call Maurice a crazy old loon and make fun of him, but Belle manages to stick up for her father, calling him a genius. One day, when Belle comes home from the bookstore, she sees her father working on a new invention and asks him if he thinks that she's odd because there's no one in town she can talk to.
Chip Potts
Chip is the son of Mrs. Potts. In his human form, Chip is a young boy who works with his mother in the castle kitchens. Like the other inhabitants of the castle Chip was cursed. While his mother was turned into a teapot, Chip was turned into a teacup. Chip is voiced by Bradley Pierce in the first film. Chip is shown to be adventurous
and constantly curious about the world around him. Chip is a cheerful and
active young boy and (like his mother and friends) is shown to have a great
fear of T temper. He is also shown to be very heroic shown in the first film, where he
saved Belle and her father Maurice in order for them
to rescue Beast from Gaston and the angry mob.
LeFou
LeFou is Gaston's sidekick. Although LeFou is far from stupid, he is still portrayed as something of a bumbler. He looks up to Gaston as his hero and takes all the abuse Gaston inflicts on him. Despite this, he seems to share something of a love/hate relationship with Gaston, as the two have been shown to get along with no problem, and Gaston mostly hurts LeFou when the latter either makes a smart remark at Gaston's expense or does something stupid. He has been dropped, hit in the head with the barrel of a gun and with Gaston's fist, had his head wedged in a number of objects (including a tuba), squashed underneath a chair, thrown into a muddy pond and a pile of snow, and has still shown loyalty to Gaston. Otherwise, LeFou is much smarter than he looks. He successfully manages to trick Maurice into describing the Beast in front of the madhouse guards in order to convince them Maurice is insane, and acts as the de facto leader of the lynch mob while Gaston is hiding in the shadows.
Fifi
Fifi is one of the castle's maids, who was turned into a feather duster during the spell. She is voiced by Kimmy Robertson with a French accent. Fifi is a very flirtatious character in Beauty and the Beast and often likes to tease and play with Lumiere during the movie. According to "Mrs.Pott's Personality Profile Game" in the special edition, Fifi's personality is described as expecting someone else to do for her and believes in doing things for herself, other than for others. She is playful, alluring and womanly. Fifi is the Castle Maid of the Beast's Castle. When the Castle was put under a spell she was turned into a feather duster.
